•Flux to the target of Proto-MPEX is measured to be 5 ± 2.5 × 1023 m−2s-1 for helicon only plasmas.•Improved visible camera analysis of Balmer emission in front of plasma target.•Helicon plasma source alone does not create high recycling regime.
