•Geochronological data suggested deposition maximum age for the Algodão Formation of 1958 ± 18 Ma.•The youngest zircon was dated as 894 ± 38 Ma in the Serra da Garapa Formation.•Zircon ages in the Santo Onofre Group were similar to glacial units of the Macaúbas Group.
