•The best Er doping concentration of LuAG single crystal is studied to be 1 at%.•The modification of temperature field is achieved by simulation and experiment.•The segregation coefficient of Er in LuAG single crystal is close to 1.•Er:LuAG presents absorption and emission at 967.5 nm and 1532 nm, respectively.
