Abstract
The preliminary results of the studies of faunal remains recovered in the excavations of the Roman villa of Pla de l'Horta (Sarria de Ter, Girones) carried out in 2014-15 are presented. Starting from a significant sample retrieved from the site, the main objective is to document the evolution of livestock as well as animal consumption and exploitation strategies from the end of 2nd century AD to the Visigoth period (5th-7th centuries AD) in this suburban villa from the Gerunda territorium. The study shows an animal husbandry based on pig and cattle between the end of 2nd century AD and the 3rd century AD aimed at the production of meat, milk and traction. These animal resources were complemented with goats and sheep, poultry and game. Husbandry dynamics evolved gradually from the High Empire to the Visigoth period, when cattle and horse played a dominant role followed by pig, goat and sheep.
