•Preexisting scales fracture in a brittle and intergranular way in the early stage of deformation.•t→m transformation of t-ZrO2 takes place in the front of the crack tip due to the concentration strain field.•Multiple t-ZrO2 grain regions form around fractures due to the combined action of oxidation, deformation and fracture.
