Inverse modeling of the natural state of geothermal reservoirs using adjoint and direct methods

•Techniques for inversion of nonlinear natural state geothermal models are developed, using the direct and adjoint methods.•Adjoint and direct methods can substantially reduce the time required for derivative-based inversion of natural state models.•Adjoint and direct methods are more robust with respect to simulation stopping criteria than standard finite differencing.
