Application of machine learning to an early warning system for very short-term heavy rainfall

•An early warning system (EWS) for heavy rainfall nowcasting is proposed.•Discretizing input variables selectively can improve the prediction quality of the EWS.•Principal component analysis matches well with the selective discretization.•A comparative analysis was conducted on various classifiers.•Logistic regression is well suited for heavy rainfall nowcasting.
