Combining cooling of underground railways with heat recovery and reuse

•A combined cooling and heat recovery system for underground railway tunnels was devised.•The recovered heat was upgraded using a heat pump, and reused in a district heating network.•A model was developed to evaluate the performance of the proposed system.•Substantial energy, cost and carbon savings compared to conventional methods were predicted.•A sensitivity analysis identified a range of key factors influencing the cost savings available.
