Implementation of control strategies for sterile insect techniques

•Strategies for releases of sterile male mosquitoes Aedes spp. are analyzed.•Based on sex-structured model, the releases consist in periodic impulsive control.•Open-loop control yields elimination with limited, but permanent, releases.•Closed-loop control yields larger pick-value, but fading release amplitude.•Mixed saturated control outperforms all others, even for overall cumulative volume.
