•Six-year-old Scots pine post-harvest stand was a modest carbon source.•Eddy covariance and C budgeting methods yielded similar results for the annual C balance.•Studied ecosystem will be able to turn into a C sink already before ten years after cutting.•Understorey vegetation contributed 57% to annual net primary production in studied stand.
