The application of different typological and structural MOFs-based materials for the dyes adsorption

•Recent progress in reported different typological and structural MOFs as superior adsorbents for the efficient removal of toxic dyes was focused on.•Strategies on improved the adsorption performance of MOFs, including optimized, modified, defective, composite and derived MOFs were summarized.•Some MOFs with special structure, including one-dimensional (1D) MOFs, two-dimensional (2D) MOFs, three-dimensional (3D) MOFs draw the attention.•Aspects related to the interaction mechanisms between dyes and MOF-based materials are systematically summarized, including adsorption performance, kinetics and thermodynamics and mechanism.
