Relational values in agroecosystem governance

•Values and the subsequent attitudes and behavior of farmers toward associated and planned biodiversity are heterogeneous and context-specific.•Relational values could unite conservation science scholarship on agricultural values and the policy mechanisms that target those values.•The relational values framework aligns with literature that calls for a pluralistic understanding of values in agricultural landscapes.•Complex policy is better suited to the complex nature of biodiversity conservation.
