•Surface quality of automotive retroreflectors has been assessed for the first time.•Results were compared with those from ultraprecise single point inverted cutting.•Average areal roughness of the conventional technology was superior.•Average waviness values are comparable.•Future work will determine the minimum quality requirement for retroreflection.
