•Deterministic and ensemble flood inundation forecasts underestimate WSE predictions.•Raw flood inundation ensemble forecasts show higher skill than the deterministic ones.•Statistical postprocessing improves skill of raw flood inundation ensemble forecasts.•The accuracy of flood maps can be improved by using weather ensembles and statistical postprocessing.
