•Huge stress appears beside the cooling channel near the root of the blade.•The middle of the pressure side of the blade is most eligible for crack nucleation.•Insulating effect of thermal barrier coating increases from trailing edge to leading edge.•5 times thicker TBC on the blade, leads to 40 times decrease in equivalent plastic strain.
