•Ferromagnetic τ-phase (Mn0.55Al0.45)B0.02 was achieved directly from drop synthesis.•Flash heating increases the magnetization.•The Curie temperature of the quenched sample was estimated to 655 K.•The highest saturation magnetization for relaxed samples was 393 kA/m.
