•Out-of-phase limit cycle oscillations were simulated in a 4-channel systems model.•Rotating mode oscillations were observed both in standalone and coupled simulations.•A physical explanation was proposed for why rotating mode oscillations are favored.•Conclusion: the rotating mode is always favored from a thermal hydraulic standpoint.
