Risk compensation theory and bicycle helmets – Results from an experiment of cycling speed and short-term effects of habituation

•Risk compensation is an unlikely effect of using bicycle helmet.•Those unfamiliar with a helmet, did not change their speed when using one.•The results remain the same even after a short period of habituation.•Cyclists feel more unsafe without a helmet, but the speed is unchanged.
