•Carnauba wax-organoclay fruit coatings were synthesized via a modified water-to-wax method.•Formulations with different organoclay dosages were compared with tow commercial waxes.•1.0 %w organoclay-formulation had the best performance for citrus postharvest quality.•This coating enhanced fruit sensory/nutritional quality & retarded weight loss over storage.
