•Two composite box girder bridges with CSWs and trusses are presented in detail.•The flexural behavior of a composite box girder with CSWs and trusses was studied.•Good integrity and ductility are shown in this kind of structure.•The assumption of plane sections remaining plane is not valid for the whole section.
