Collapse-driven formation of depressions on comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko

• The model of collapse of the plate covering cavity in comet 67P/Ch-G is presented.• It was found that material parameters (poorly known Young modulus and strength) are crucial for the final results.• If collapse mechanism works thus small cavities were formed several orbital periods before present.• If depressions Hatmehit and Imhotep are of collapse origin therefore collapse has happen when the ceiling thickness has been of an order of 10 m or more.
