Abstract
•The severity of inflammation is closely related to the degree of skeletal muscle loss in cirrhotic patients waiting for living donor liver transplantation (LDLT).•Among inflammatory cytokines, serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-α are independently associated with skeletal muscle wasting in both male and female patients scheduled for LDLT.•Identification of molecular and metabolic pathways involved in skeletal muscle wasting will be helpful to establish targeted therapies focused on attenuating severe inflammation in patients on a waiting list for LDLT.
