The Intestinal Failure Outcomes Experience after Establishing the First Multidisciplinary Intestinal Rehabilitation Program at São Paulo University Hospital

Abstract
A multidisciplinary intestinal rehabilitation (IR) team has been placed our in our Institution over 20 years ago. The aim of this study is to analyze: age, gender, underlying disease, remnant small bowel length, home parenteral nutrition (HPN), surgical rehabilitation procedure, survival rate and complications. Method: We conducted a retrospective study of our intestinal failure (IF) registry. 120 files were analyzed in the period from January 1st 1996 to December 31st 2016. Results: The mean age reported in our sample was 42 years, 48 (40%) patients were female and 72 patients (60%) were male. The most prevalent underlying disease is Crohn’s Disease. Concerning the small bowel length, 33, and 3% of the patients had ultra-short bowel syndrome (USBS). All the patients with USBS were included in our rehabilitation program using HPN (40 patients used HPN, among this patients, 10 were submitted to surgical reconstruction). The survival rate was 80, 8% and the major complication was central line infection with bloodstream infection. Conclusion: A multidisciplinary approach of IF that prioritizes IR and achieve successful HPN advancement improving survival rate and quality of life. Reference: 1. Lee, ADW, et al.
