•A computational model of crack bridging in polymer coated Bioglass scaffold is proposed.•Computer tomography observations provided data for 3D foam structure reconstruction.•Cell irregularities are studied in connection to the size effect and the overall elastic properties.•A coating infiltration into surface defects of struts results in a high toughness increase.
