Abstract
•This is the first study investigating the relationship between severe hypoglycaemia and ambient temperature.•Our findings suggest the existence of a “thermal comfort zone” covering a temperature range from 10 to 20 °C in which the frequency of severe hypoglycaemia is low. In contrast, temperatures below 10 °C and above 20 °C seem to be a trigger for severe hypoglycaemia.•This knowledge can help people with diabetes to be particularly attentive with regard to early signs of hypoglycaemia in cold or warm temperatures.
