•MOFs were firstly modified via a new method by introduction of Cu and Ce oxides.•The modified MOFs were applied in adsorptive desulfurization.•Cu and Ce increased adsorption via π-complexation and direct bond, respectively.•Ce oxide increased reusability of adsorbent and resistance to aromatics.
