This widespread in bacterial resistance is most likely related to the abusive and unnecessary use of antibiotics such as β-Lactams. Without a doubt, this practice promotes the selection of resistant strains; including those capable of producing different extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs). Typically, susceptible bacteria do not possess the necessary genetic machinery to survive in the presence of β-Lactams, relying on the horizontal transfer of resistance plasmids. Environmental contamination with bacteria originated from urban wastewaters and effluents from livestock farms can be a source of resistance plasmids capable of being acquired by susceptible bacteria. Thus, it becomes essential to conduct environmental studies regarding the occurrence of resistant strains present in natural watercourses. The objective of this study was to determine the presence of bacterial molecular determinants encoding the ESBL BlaCTX-M and blaTEM in the S. Domingos River, Peniche, Portugal. A selective media to Enterobacteriaceae with the antimicrobial cefotaxime was used for bacterial isolation and the presence of blaCTX-M and blaTEM was evaluated by PCR. It was concluded that both genes were present in several bacteria, suggesting that the resistance to β-lactams is spreading through environment areas. This fact poses a noteworthy threat to the public health, as it shows that drug resistant bacteria are present in watercourses, with the potential to transmit resistance genes to native bacteria.
