ChemInform Abstract: α,β-Epoxy Sulfoxides as Useful Intermediates in Organic Synthesis. Part 20. The Reaction of α,β-Epoxy Sulfoxides with Lithium Dimethylcuprate Giving Enolates: A Novel Synthesis of Aldols.

The phenylsulfinyloxiranes (III), generated from the α‐chloro sulfoxides (I) and the aldehydes (II), are consecutively treated with lithium dimethylcuprate, zinc chloride, and the carbonyl compounds (IV) to form the β‐hydroxy ketones (V) with predominance of the threo‐diastereomers.
