•Successful time averaged carbon accounting in a forest-rubber-agriculture landscape.•Aboveground C stock in rubber plantations was one third of that in natural forest.•Elevation, rotation length and management determine carbon stock in rubber plantation.•Sensitivity analysis proved the importance of forest to carbon balance in landscape.•Functional zoning and reforestation maintain landscape carbon stocks in reserve.
