摘要
Despite the diverse representation of racial-ethnic groups in Canada, few studies on parent cultural socialization practices (CSP) have focused on parents residing in Canada. Existing research has not yet established the equivalence of the measurement properties of parent CSP across diverse racial-ethnic groups in Canada. Additionally, few studies that incorporate survey-based measures of CSP have determined whether instruments hypothesised to measure parent CSP tap into a phenomenon that is unique from other supportive parenting practices. The current study involves an exploratory investigation of the psychometric properties of a multigroup CSP measure among a sample of 296 parents of young children from diverse racial-ethnic minority (Aboriginal, Black or African, Latin American, Southeast or East Asian, Arab or South Asian, and Mixed Race-Ethnicity) and racial-ethnic majority (White or Western European and Eastern European) groups residing in Canada. The CSP measure used in the current study was derived from existing measures of CSP originally developed for specific racial-ethnic groups residing in the United States. Findings revealed a single CSP construct that was unique from other general supportive parenting behaviours. The CSP construct showed good construct validity across the sample of racial-ethnic minority and majority parents. Differences in the frequency of CSP were found between the racial-ethnic minority and majority parents and between specific racial-ethnic groups. Implications for research on parent CSP are discussed.
