The electronic structure of W2Cx nonstoichiometric tungsten carbides

X-ray emission and X-ray electron spectra indicate a small transfer of charge from a tungsten atom to carbon in W2CX. With an increase in nonstoichiometry of these compounds there is an increase in density of the d-states of tungsten in the near-Fermi area. For W2CX strong hybridization of the W5d- and C2p-states is characteristic.
