Gastrointestinal symptoms before and after laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: a longitudinal assessment.

Question: Does the long-term prevalence of gastrointestinal symptoms increase after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass?Findings: In this prospective cohort study, the mean score on a validated symptom questionnaire increased significantly from 1.69 to 2.31. The prevalence of food intolerance also increased significantly from 16.1% to 69.6%.Meaning: Clinicians should be aware of the increase in gastrointestinal symptoms after surgery, and inform their patients prior to surgery.
