Burden of Disease Attributable to Obesity and Overweight in Colombia

•Surveys have been developed in Colombia to assess the prevalence of overweight and obesity in different age groups, but little information is available about the impact of these risk factors in terms of burden of disease.•In this study, 997 371 disability-adjusted life-years were attributable to obesity, of which 81% corresponded to years lost to disability. Conditions with greater attributable disability-adjusted life-years are, in order, hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiac ischemic disease, and lower back pain.•This study provides insights into the impact of overweight and obesity in terms of burden of disease and economics, which show the need for early intervention policies.
