•The NLRP3 inflammasome was activated and the IL-23/IL-17 axis was upregulated after tMCAO.•The NLRP3 inflammasome was suppressed by MCC950 in mice after tMCAO.•Inhibition of the NLRP3 inflammasome by MCC950 attenuated the ischaemia-reperfusion injury after tMCAO.•Inhibition of the NLRP3 inflammasome by MCC950 reduced the activation of IL-23/IL-17 axis after tMCAO.
