•An overexpression of MTA1 was associated with poor prognosis in EC.•MTA1 facilitates EC development both in vitro and vivo.•MTA1 reverses the effect of its moderator, miR-30c, on EC cells.•The AKT/mTOR/4E-BP1 pathway may be the key pathway regulated by MTA1 in EC.•Silencing of MTA1 results in inhibition of EC.
