•Not all rodent subjects responded to blast exposure in the same way.•Rodents with chronic anxiety-like behaviors had less prefrontal cortex stathmin.•Those with acute anxiety-like behavior had more corticosterone, amygdalar stathmin.•Those with high acute corticosterone display more anxiety-like behaviors.•Those with high acute or chronic amygdalar stathmin had more anxiety-like behavior.
