•β-glucuronidase activity is lower in the feces but not the colon tissue of DSS-induced colitis mice.•Bacterial β-glucuronidase improves the intestinal barrier integrity.•Bacterial β-glucuronidase inhibits the TLR4-MyD88-NF-κB signaling.•The activities of fecal digestive proteases decrease while the β-glucuronidase increases after FMT.
