•SMYA significantly reduces the area of aortic plaque in ApoE-/- mice.•SMYA increases the recruitment of VV pericytes, and promotes the maturation of V in plaque.•SMYA in promoting the process of VV maturation, and inhibits angiogenesis in plaques.•SMYA regulates the expression of the signal pathway of Dll4/Notch1/Hey1/VEGF, and stabilizes vulnerable plaques.
