•Trematode cercariae exhibited consistent preferences for specific host species.•However, parasite choices did not correlate with host susceptibility to infection.•Thus, several species functioned as epidemiological ‘sinks’ and lowered transmission.•These results inform efforts to forecast infections in complex host communities.
