•Red mud can be used to prepare a paraffin/red mud phase change energy storage composite by a mixed mill-heating method.•The fabricated paraffin/red mud phase change energy storage composites have good thermal stabilities.•The heat storage performance can be improved with the addition of a phase change energy storage composite replacement.
