•A novel lignin-based multifunctional fertilizer (LMF) was developed.•Nutrient use efficiency, water-holding and water-retention capacity were improved.•LMF can regulate and improve physical and chemical properties of soil environment.•LMF can immobilize of Pb(II) in contaminated soil and promote plant growth.
