Enhanced stolon growth and metabolic adjustment in creeping bentgrass with elevated CO2 concentration

•Elevated CO2 stimulated stolon growth and proliferation in stoloniferous grass species exposed to drought stress.•CO2-enhanced stolon growth was due to increased formation of stolon nodes.•Enhanced stolon growth was due to metabolite changes for energy reserves, respiratory metabolism, and membrane maintenance.
