•A strategy for development of adsorbent with high performance is well-defined.•Metal organic frameworks is used as template.•Porous Fe0.72(0)Fe2.28(II)C was synthesized in accordance with the proposed strategy.•Fe0.72(0)Fe2.28(II)C exhibited desirable Cr(VI) removal capability of 354.6 mg g−1.
