•New-onset diabetes mellitus is a serious complication after transplantation influencing patients’ life.•Adipocytokines are hormones produced by adipose tissue as a part of metabolic pathways and also disorders including diabetes mellitus.•The most studied adipocytokines in this field: adiponectin, leptin, TNF-α, PAI-1, IGF2, FGF-21, visfatin, resistin.•Adipocytokines can play role in the development of NODAT or they could be potentilally used for a screening of NODAT.
