An update from hospital-based surveillance for rotavirus gastroenteritis among young children in Bangladesh, July 2012 to June 2017.

•About two-third of children aged <5 years hospitalized with diarrhoea had rotavirus infection.•The rotavirus associated mortality rate <1%.•Genotypes of isolates consisted of 5 G types (G1, G2, G3, G9, G12) and 3P types (P4, P6, P8).•The government of Bangladesh is planning to introduce a rotavirus vaccine in 2018.
