•Ecological studies often ignore vegetation bias in global DEMs (e.g. SRTM, ASTER).•We evaluated accuracy of two newly available global vegetation bias corrected DEMs.•Vertical error in new MERIT DEM has improved compared to SRTM in our study area.•Vegetation bias affected derived terrain indices and species distribution models.•Effect of vegetation bias in DEMs decrease significantly with resolution adopted.
