•SFP was found to be sulfated polysaccharides with L-fucose predominated.•SFP could reduce skin water loss, protect immune organs and skin structure in mice.•The oxidative stress caused by UVB was inhibited by SFP.•MMP-1 and MMP-9 which could cause collagen degradation were suppressed by SFP.
