Abstract
•Crystallinity of MoO3 and Zr(MoO4)2 increases significantly with Mo loading.•H2/CH4 (80/20 vol%) treatment at 550 and 700 °C induces Mo5+ and Mo4+ formation.•Mo5+ species are particularly active and stable during anisole HDO.•Hydrodeoxygenation prevails over hydrogenation during anisole conversion over Mo.
