摘要
•Blooms of toxin-producing cyanobacteria are expected to increase as global temperatures rise.•More than 23 classes and 200 toxic metabolites have been characterized from cyanobacteria.•Current water monitoring methods screen for the dominant toxins and many others go undetected.•Robust analytical methods are needed for the detection of toxins in drinking and irrigation water.•Strategies must be developed to address the risks of cyanotoxins to water quality and human health.
