•A novel sol-gel method for superconducting joints for MgB2 thin films.•Two HPCVD MgB2 is pasted with Mg(BH4)2•Et2O gel, followed by annealing in Mg vapor.•The joint showed a high TC of 34 K in 0 T and 20 K in 4 T.
